Miller was found unresponsive on March 21, 2025, at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, where his family was vacationing. Initial reports suggested asphyxia due to food poisoning, but further examination found no blockage in his airways.

Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, an OIJ spokesperson, stated:

“We are now looking into whether an allergic reaction to medication or an undetected health condition played a role.”

Toxicology results may take two to three months due to backlogs from unrelated gang violence cases elsewhere in Costa Rica—a separate issue that does not affect tourist areas like Manuel Antonio.

The Costa Rican Chamber of Tourism reaffirmed that no widespread travel disruptions have occurred, urging visitors to continue enjoying the country’s natural beauty and warm hospitality.

A Family’s Heartbreak and the Road Ahead

Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, described their son as a bright, adventurous boy who loved baseball, fishing, and the outdoors. In a statement, they expressed their grief:

“We have so many questions and so few answers. Miller lived every day to the fullest, and we are shattered by his loss.”

As the investigation continues, the U.S. Embassy is assisting the family in repatriating Miller’s remains.
